State to audit exit pay at FAU

One week after praising former FAU fund-raiser Lawrence Davenport, who resigned with $577,950 in severance pay, school President Frank Brogan acknowledged that he wanted Davenport out.

Brogan, who has faced criticism from trustees, legislators and foundation members over the amount of Davenport's severance, said in a six-page letter released late Monday that he had different "leadership philosophies and communication styles" than the man who in 2004 he handpicked to help transform Florida Atlantic University.

Who's the Best Health Insurer?

Health insurance is one of the trickiest subjects in personal finance. For many, just finding coverage is a challenge. Once you have health insurance, getting the benefits you've paid for isn't always as easy as it should be. Making sure you keep your coverage if you change jobs or move to a different state can be essential to managing your health care costs successfully.

Although many people don't have a lot of options in choosing coverage -- they're stuck with what their employer offers -- you still want to make sure your health insurance company meets your particular needs. Yet according to a recent survey released by J.D. Power, a number of insurers, especially those that trade publicly on stock exchanges, don't do as well as others in providing good customer service.

The best insurersThe survey looked at available health-insurance coverage in four regions of the country.

Finance Chiefs To Survey Robust World Economy

Global financial chiefs gather in Washington this week to take stock of a world economy that appears to be shrugging off a housing-led slowdown in the United States.

However, currency rates will again stoke debate among finance ministers and central bankers from the Group of Seven nations, who meet Friday ahead of the annual spring gathering of the IMF and World Bank at the weekend. "Discussion on exchange rates is likely to include the yen, the dollar, the euro and the (Chinese) yuan," Japanese Finance Minister Koji Omi said last Friday. But the G7 industrialized nations -- Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States -- "will not particularly focus on the yen" at their meeting, Omi told reporters in Tokyo. The G7 ministers opted for a relatively soft line on the sliding Japanese yen at their February meeting in Germany despite European concerns about the currency's weakness, which is hurting eurozone exporters.

Ex-agent accused of stealing premiums

A former Allstate insurance agent has been accused of keeping money that was to have been applied to several clients' insurance policies.

According to court documents, John A. Newbury, 66, of Angola, was charged with a single count of theft, a Class D felony, after an investigation revealed that he had accepted and deposited his clients' checks without applying the funds toward their policies between September 2003 and May 2004.

Fort Wayne police first began investigating Newbury when an insurance investigator with Allstate called them to report a theft.

According to police, Newbury received a check from a customer for an insurance premium and instead of applying the money to the customer's account, he kept it for himself.

An internal audit later revealed that Newbury had misappropriated funds from at least four of his customers, keeping $2,953.47 for himself, police said.

Aid for low-income Martin residents may be on way

STUART — Displaced mobile home residents in Martin County might benefit from a proposed housing development — just one of the ways officials are trying to help.

As part of final negotiations next week on plans for a Hobe Sound project known as Atlantic Ridge Preserve, Commissioner Lee Weberman is asking the developer to contribute to the beginnings of a low- income housing fund. It's the latest effort by county officials to find help for low-income residents who are being pushed out of their mobile homes.

Drug firms check out pets

Pfizer Inc., perhaps best known for bringing blockbuster cholesterol drugs and impotency pills to market to treat humans, is lately making headlines treating man's best friend.

Pfizer scored two firsts within the last two months after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved its prescription medication for overweight dogs and a drug to prevent and treat vomiting in dogs due to motion sickness.

Though drugs for pets represent just a fraction of the U.S. prescription market, big drugmakers like Pfizer, Abbott Laboratories and Novartis AG see growth potential in the sector.

First, there's the numbers: Six of 10 U.S. households have a pet in a market of more than 66 million dogs and more than 78 million cats, industry analysts say.

In addition, pet owners are increasingly willing to spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars on care that goes beyond the traditional treatments for ticks, fleas and rabies into areas that range from arthritis and anxiety to obesity and diabetes.
