Uninsured having to make tough choices

With just one income, the Wood family has enough money to buy medical insurance for either Jami Wood or her 8-month-old son, Evan.

Wood and husband Christopher, who has government insurance as a veteran, said it wasn't hard to choose. Evan would get the insurance.

"The baby had to have insurance," said the 27-year-old mother who quit working after their son was born.

Through www.ehealthinsurance.com, the family bought a policy for $76 a month from Aetna. (It has since increased to $92 a month.) It has a $2,000 deductible and $25 co-pay but covers Evan's routine checkups and immunizations.

"They wanted almost $200 more a month for me, and we couldn't afford that with an $1,100 house note," she said.

Jami Wood is typical of a large chunk of the 44.8 million people who have no medical insurance, according to new U.S.

Bill's aim is to ease big pain for docs

Dr. Randy Wexler spends about an hour and a half each day away from patients, working on health-insurance paperwork.

This includes going over changes in contracts and verifying for insurers that even longtime patients are indeed patients.

On top of the time the Gahanna family physician spends on insurance is the time his nurses and office workers spend on the phone with insurance companies checking patients' coverage, resubmitting claims and updating Wexler's credential forms.

"Right now, we spend an inordinate amount of time on paperwork," Wexler said.

That could change.

A bill introduced in the Ohio Senate and House aims to reduce the insurance paperwork.

The bill, backed by the Ohio State Medical Association, would mandate clearer contracts, Web-based access to check patient coverage, and a standard online form for credential verification.

Pruned health-insurance plans advanced by House

Arizonans will have access to stripped-down health insurance plans if the Senate and the governor approve a House plan. The House voted 32-25 on March 13 to allow insurance companies to offer pruned health plans to individual policyholders and more small businesses. The vote came amid claims by supporters that many Arizonans don't purchase health insurance because the only options are unaffordable. House Bill 2757, dubbed by Rep. Kirk Adams, R-Mesa, as "mandate lite," would eliminate some of the coverages lawmakers previously said all policies had to include. The vote came as legislators are increasingly focused on how to get coverage for the perhaps 1.1 million Arizonans who do not have health insurance. .

Council needs to know a few things before striking budget

It's a daunting task trying to involve the public in a budget process that must reveal all required information and be clearly presented with transparency and plain language.

The Kitchener city council process is still a work in progress, and judging from the answers given to those attending the Jan. 17 public budget meeting, a greater effort is required.

Taxpayers want council to be candid on budget items and to inform us, say, if it intends to subsidize provincial responsibilities or claw back a tax break. We want to know the entire GST rebate and where it is to be spent, and where will the millions in rebate from the fuel tax be spent, and what legislative changes require more expensive staff, and why is the 3.3 per cent municipal price index used to increase staff salaries instead of the lower consumer price index.
