An Independent Approach To Car Insurance

(NAPSI)-Many consumers are finding they can drive down the cost of car insurance-and the time it takes to select the right policy-by contacting an independent insurance agent or broker. Because they represent many different insurance companies, independent agents have the flexibility to review rates and coverage from competing carriers and get you the best deal. Plus, they can offer affordable protection for your home, business and other assets. So rather than spending hours gathering quotes from various companies, you can get it done with one simple call or visit to your independent agent or broker. If you're thinking of contacting an independent agent, here are a few things to consider: • What's your lifestyle? Many factors determine auto insurance rates, not just vehicle year, make and model.

School board draws 4 candidates for 2 seats

Four Choteau residents filed for two seats on the school board before the March 29 filing deadline elapsed, setting up a contested board race and a levy election in the elementary district on May 8.

The Choteau school board has two openings this spring as the terms of Ross Salmond, a longtime board member, and Perri Lindgren expire. Salmond is not seeking reelection but Lindgren has filed for his third term in office. Lindgren, 47, is the owner and operator of PDL Performance Repair. He grew up here and is a lifelong resident. He and his wife, Joyce, have a son in junior high.

Joining the race are:

Mark Henderson, 46, who works in propane sales and service for Breen Oil Co., and has been a resident of Choteau for about eight years. He and his wife, Christi, have four children in the school system and one who will be in school next year.

Farmers call for quick action on disaster aid bill

Area farmers who experienced crop losses in 2005 say they and their neighbors need federal disaster aid immediately to stay in business.

Having waited two years is long enough, said Larry Neubauer of Bottineau. We cant wait any longer. We must get compensation to cover some of those losses that we incurred in 2005. We are at a very critical time period here because we are under scrutiny from our lenders to have our budgets in place. Its very, very difficult. We are finding lots of people in my area that are having trouble with their lending. They are behind. They should have had their lines of credit put in place already.

Neubauer spoke in support of a federal disaster bill at a news conference with U.S. Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., Wednesday at Bourgault Industries in Minot.

No passport? You can still visit Mexico by car

REAL DE CATORCE, Mexico (AP) -- So you want to go to Mexico, but you don't have a passport? There are still options, at least for one more year.

Using just your driver's license or birth certificate, Americans can cross the border and spend a day buying trinkets and even a bottle of tequila to take home from one of Mexico's dozens of bordertowns, scattered between Tijuana and Matamoros. Or, if you have a long weekend and want to explore farther south, you can take a bus or drive to old mining towns that seem untouched by time, like the mountaintop Real de Catorce.

As of January 23, all U.S. citizens must have a passport for airline travel to Mexico and the Caribbean. But, those traveling by land or boat need only a driver's license or birth certificate. (The U.S.

Taffy Entertainment Gets Bobby’s World

The show, created by and starring actor/comedian Howie Mandel (host of NBCs Deal or No Deal), will be distributed worldwide by Taffy, beginning with the upcoming MIPTV Market in April 2007. Taffy has also begun implementing a comprehensive licensing and consumer products campaign around the Bobbys World brand. The decision to offer Bobbys World on a worldwide basis comes on the heels of a successful re-launch of the series earlier this year on Kabillion, the new multi-platform, kids program service, available in the U.S. both as a free video on-demand (VOD) channel on Comcast Cable systems nationwide and a free online broadband site (www.Kabillion.com). Since the show debuted on the new service in January, it has been downloaded and viewed over 500,000 times and it has an even higher number of views on the website.

Column: She’s the teen with the title

And then there were two as Rutgers eliminated LSU and Tennessee goes on a 20-2 run late to knock out North Carolina in the NCAA women's basketball tournament Final Four on Sunday night in Cleveland.

2. The NCAA men's basketball tournament championship in Atlanta gets set as Florida knocks out UCLA and Ohio State upends Georgetown in the national semifinals.

1. Michael Phelps pulls a Mark Spitz and wins his seventh gold medal on Sunday in the world swimming championships, and could have won an eighth had the U.S. 400 medley relay team not been disqualified when Ian Crocker dove into the pool too soon.

Our topic of discussion: 4. And a teen shall lead ...

This just wasn't supposed to happen. No way could this be seen from a mile or two away.

US fears prompt further market slide

Stocks in Asia and Europe fell again yesterday, continuing the latest global sell-off amid concerns about the health of the US mortgage market. In London the FTSE 100 fell 110.4 points to close down 1.8 per cent on 6,050.8, following an earlier 2.9 per cent fall in Japan's Nikkei index. Markets in Hong Kong, Malaysia, India and Australia also recorded falls of more than two per cent, while Wall Street was rocked by figures showing a significant rise in default levels for the US sub-prime mortgage market and weaker-than-expected retail sales figures. New York's Dow Jones index was down by two per cent as the latest data showed that late mortgage payments and home repossessions in the sub-prime market were at their highest-ever level. This prompted fears that the current state of the industry, which provides home loans to those with poor credit histories, could cause a downturn in the US economy, the world's largest.

Fighting Change: Alleghany farmers feeling pressure, they say

SPARTA - On her way to her family's farm nestled on a quiet ridge, Milly Richardson drives past a luxury home development. The sight of a gated entrance and coach house makes her angry. She is headstrong about the land, her neighbors and the increasing number of farms threatened by development pressure.

Last fall, voters in Alleghany County elected her to the board of commissioners because farmers say that she understands them.

"They know I'll get in there and fight," Richardson said. "You know that pretty much says it all. It's just about a community, and they just don't want to be pushed out."

She struggles with the balance between preservation and development. She knows the question on a lot of minds right now: what's the best use of the land?

Alleghany County, like many other mountain counties, is looking to build a future on tourism and development and is forced to discuss land-use regulations.

Judge Rejects Federal Antitrust, Racketeering Charges in Account ...

Plaintiffs in a class action suit against commercial insurers and brokers for alleged bid rigging and account steering have failed to show that the defendants' actions amounted to fraud under federal racketeering statutes or violated federal antitrust laws, a federal judge in New Jersey has ruled in dismissing the charges.

Judge Garrett E. Brown Jr. in U.S. District Court in Newark, N.J., found that the plaintiffs failed to support their assertions that insurers and brokers conspired to suppress competition and fraudulently sell insurance and benefits by agreeing on certain bid-rigging, account steering and contingent commission arrangements.

The judge did, however, give plaintiffs one more shot, granting them a 30 day window to come back with an amended case addressing his concerns.

County expands new discount dental program

Macomb County officials have expanded their discount dental program to include nearly 600 additional dentists in Macomb County who offer deep discounts to subscribers.

For an annual fee of $69 per household, the program provides 20 percent to 50 percent savings on a long list of dental procedures, including cleanings, fillings, X-rays, crowns and orthodontics.

Since the service began last July, more than 660 households -- representing more than 1,600 subscribers -- have enrolled.

When enrollment in the expanded program began last Monday, JoAnn Daniels of Shelby Township was one of the first to sign up. She and her husband are recent retirees who lost their dental insurance coverage last year.

"I was aware of the program and I had been tossing it around and I thought for $69 I should give it a try," said Daniels, 63.

Insider's Guide: Employee Health Benefits

When Kara Trott set out to arrange health-care coverage for her employees she relied on her own expertise. Ms. Trott is the CEO of Quantum Health LLC , a Columbus, Ohio, firm that helps big companies organize and manage their health and related benefits programs. Before founding the company in 1999, she worked as a consultant in the industry.

She started her firm with about five employees. Now at about 65, her current staff is still too small to justify the kind of big-company benefits programs she advises on. Rather, she's had to create a benefits system on a smaller ...

Judge Strikes Down COPA, 1998 Online Porn Law

Begopa sends in word that a federal judge has struck down the Child Online Protection Act. The judge said that parents can protect their children through software filters and other less restrictive means that do not limit others' rights to free speech. This was the case for which the US Department of Justice subpoenaed several search companies for search records; only Google fought the order. The case has already been to the Supreme Court. Senior U.S. District Judge Lowell Reed Jr. wrote in his decision: "Perhaps we do the minors of this country harm if First Amendment protections, which they will with age inherit fully, are chipped away in the name of their protection." .

Police Briefs for 3/29/07

FRANKLIN: Two juveniles were taken into custody for starting a brush fire that escalated out of control Tuesday night.

At about 6:30 p.m., police were notified of a smoke condition near the Sunflower Road area. Upon arrival, they spotted a large black cloud of smoke about 150 yards behind the nearby homes. As the officers moved closer, they spotted two 15-year-old boys carrying water buckets toward the fire, police said.

"They apparently realized the fire was too big to put out with the buckets of water," said Cpl. Philip Rizzo.

The teens told the officers that an abandoned couch caught fire after they built a pyramid out of old tires, put some wood on top and a piece of cloth. The items apparently ignited after some deodorant was sprayed on them, Rizzo said.
