An Independent Approach To Car Insurance

(NAPSI)-Many consumers are finding they can drive down the cost of car insurance-and the time it takes to select the right policy-by contacting an independent insurance agent or broker. Because they represent many different insurance companies, independent agents have the flexibility to review rates and coverage from competing carriers and get you the best deal. Plus, they can offer affordable protection for your home, business and other assets. So rather than spending hours gathering quotes from various companies, you can get it done with one simple call or visit to your independent agent or broker. If you're thinking of contacting an independent agent, here are a few things to consider: • What's your lifestyle? Many factors determine auto insurance rates, not just vehicle year, make and model.

New US scrutiny could curb anemia drugs' use

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Sales of blockbuster anemia drugs made by Amgen Inc. and Johnson & Johnson face further pressure as U.S. health officials review their risks and how the government pays for them.

New warnings of deaths and life-threatening heart problems in some patients have sparked concern at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) -- the nation's largest health-care payer.

The agency, which covers the poor, elderly and disabled, is examining its coverage of the drugs, called erythropoiesis-stimulating agents. Private insurance carriers could follow suit.

FM'S REPLY TO DABATE ON GENERAL BUDGET IN RAJYA SABHA

Following is the text of the speech of the Finance Minister, Shri P. Chidambaram in reply to the debate on General Budget 2007-08 in Rajya Sabha today: -

"Mr. Chairman Sir, I am grateful to the Honourable Members belonging to different political parties who have participated in the debate on the Budget for 2007-08. I have listened to most of the interventions and I have also studied the notes made on the other interventions. It seems to me that most Members have mixed views: while they are genuinely happy about the impressive growth of the economy, they are legitimately concerned about some aspects of the growth which affect sections of the people. In fact, I share these sentiments and I have given expression to them in the Budget speech. There is no doubt that we have recorded an unprecedented rate of growth, but the question is, is the growth inclusive? There is no doubt that there is an investment boom in the country, but the question is, is the investment across all sectors, especially agriculture? There is no doubt that more jobs have been created, but the question is, are there jobs available for all? In the course of my reply, I shall make an attempt to answer these questions.

Rental insurance: Better to be safe ...

You walk up to the rental car counter to pick up your car, and the agent asks if you want the optional insurance through the rental company.

At $20 per day, the coverage seems a little costly, and you remember hearing that your personal auto insurance provides sufficient coverage. So you pass.

Yet, as you drive away from the airport you wonder what the right answer to the question really is. Of course, any good lawyer will tell you It depends.

Here are the facts.

If you take the rental car companys insurance, chances are you are paying to alleviate any problems should the car be damaged in an accident. The answer is conditional because you must still be operating the vehicle lawfully. Many, if not most, insurance contracts have clauses that provide that the coverage will not protect you if you are driving recklessly, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

VA director advocates for 'families initiative'

DECATUR - Tammy Duckworth knew she could quote statistics all day, but sharing an account about meeting a woman who is without health insurance and can't afford prostheses for her amputated arms and legs told the true story."We need to make sure all Illinoisans have access to affordable coverage," said Duckworth, director of that Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs, who also is an amputee. "What kind of country have we become when good families are now without health care insurance?"Duckworth addressed a small crowd on Thursday morning at the Illinois Brotherhood of Electrical Workers 974 building to advocate for Gov. Rod Blagojevich's "Investing in Families Initiative," which is the proposed budget for fiscal year 2008.The initiative includes the "Illinois Covered" plan to provide insurance to all Illinoisans, the "Helping Kids Learn" plan to invest an additional $10 billion in Illinois schools over the next four years and requiring big businesses to pay a "gross receipts tax," as well as a plan to address the state's longtime pension deficit for thousands of retired state workers."This is a historic budget proposal; it's time to invest in the schools - improve the environment and make it better for students, better for teachers and administrators," said Bob Arya, senior adviser to the governor."We need to reform our tax system; it's broken, doesn't work and is not fair.

AARP wants candidates to focus on health care

ST. PETERSBURG - Presidential candidates campaigning in Florida can expect persistent grilling about health insurance, prescription drugs and Social Security if AARP has its way.

The lobbying group for older Americans announced Wednesday that it will stock every public campaign event in the state with vocal volunteers who will try to pin candidates down on health care reform and financial security for retirees.

The moment is ripe, AARP "social impact" executive Nancy LeaMond said in a news conference.

Polls show that Americans place a high priority on accessible, affordable health care, she said. And business groups are beginning to take the same view.

The Business Roundtable, traditionally a Republican-tilting organization, will join AARP in trying to steer the public debate toward health care and retirement issues, as will the Service Employees International Union, usually aligned with Democrats.

No ideology in children's health

The White House and New York are going in opposite directions on SCHIP, the program jointly funded to provide medical coverage for children. President George W. Bush wants to limit Washington's contribution, but New York has moved to expand eligibility and cover more people.

The White House frames the issue ideologically. It prefers private insurance, subsidized through tax breaks where necessary, rather than expanded government coverage through the State Children's Health Insurance Program. It shouldn't be an either-or proposition.

Congressman gets an earful at Katrina evacuee roundtable

Valerie Robinson tried, but failed, to hold back tears as she waved the eviction notice for everyone sitting around the table to see.

She landed in San Antonio after Hurricane Katrina and the ensuing flood forced her from the New Orleans homeless shelter where she lived before the storm hit Aug. 29, 2005.

"Every time I got rental assistance, it was cut," said the 59-year-old, who recently took classes to become a pharmacy technician. "I can't study for my certification test if I don't know what my housing situation is."

Robinson was one of a dozen hurricane victims now living in San Antonio who met Saturday morning with U.S. Rep. Ciro Rodriguez. For nearly three hours, they vented their frustrations with the bureaucracy and failings of the federal government — particularly the Federal Emergency Management Agency — to the San Antonio Democrat.

Wolff’s Agenda Includes Changes to Dairy Pricing

Changes in dairy pricing and alternative energy were among the topics discussed during a press forum Wednesday with Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Dennis Wolff and members of the media.

With a dairy industry that is struggling to keep up with higher feed prices, Wolff laid out some of the initiatives he said will be part of the state's Farm Bill recommendations.

Among them is eliminating the federal price support program for milk and instead, setting a price floor on milk. The federal dairy price support program, which was enacted by the government more than 70 years ago, requires the Commodity Credit Corporation, a USDA entity, to keep the price of milk used for manufactured products at $9.90 per hundredweight by purchasing non-fat dry milk, butter, and cheese at established prices.

Bureaucracy Trumps Logic In Flood Repairs

Jason E. Todd has learned the hard way that the old adage "No good deed goes unpunished" is alive and well when it comes to dealing with Fairfax County government bureaucracy. He's been trying for 10 months to repair his flood damaged home in the Huntington section of Mount Vernon District.
His big mistake was trying to go above and beyond the necessary level of responsibility to make his Arlington Terrace home better and safer than it was prior to Cameron Run's flood rampage last June. Instead of support and encouragement from County bureaucrats, what he got was legal technicalities and Pavlovian adherence to unyielding dogma about what they perceived was and was not necessary when addressing floodplain construction.
"My Huntington home was flooded with between 11 and 12 feet of water in late June last year.

Case Study: Enterprise & Database CM

A perennial question in the configuration management field is how to control databases. Databases are too big and too complex to be managed as simple objects. They have a very expressive language-SQL-for describing their structure, content, and changes. Database CM is important when either the structure or the content of a critical database is being managed. And it is essential for the growing number of business systems driven by metadata[1]. Despite this need, there have been no general solutions available. Commercial vendors have not taken the obvious step of providing generalized configuration and/or change management support, and CM solutions for databases have focused on the structure only, treating content and other attributes, including triggers and stored procedures, as an installation problem rather than a development problem.

A New Cubbies Name; A Zach Win; Random thoughts...

We've heard them all as prospective Cubs owners when the team is sold at the end of the season, including Mark Cuban and Bill Murray. I'm going to a throw a name in the hat that I think is worth considering: Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum. While the ruler of Dubai hasn't shown much previous interest in baseball, he has shown plenty of interest in sports. He is the leading partner in Godolphin Stables, which features $1 billion in horses, and was in the running to buy Liverpool before it was purchased by George Gillett. Buying the Cubs would be about the vehicle - not necessarily about the Cubs themselves. Ultimately, he wants to promote Dubai and - more importantly to this story -- his family's airline, Emirates Air. The Sheikh already partnered with a company called the Human Interest Group out of Colorado who have helped them sign triathletes to promote the city of Dubai.

Rising stress of health care

A self-employed travel consultant with an information technology background, Drewey opted to do without health insurance, even though he has Type 1 diabetes. Drewey, 45, of Mount Vernon, N.Y., said his business isn't far enough along for him to afford a plan.

Apart from the diabetes, Drewey said, his health is good. He manages his condition well with insulin, which he pays for out of pocket, $75 for a two-week supply. Things went well until February, when a celebration he attended sent his blood sugar out of balance.

He spent four days at White Plains Hospital Center. The bill: $10,000. Drewey is trying to arrange a payment plan with the hospital that will spread the cost over several years.

He said he doesn't understand how, in a country like the United States with all its resources, a person can find it so difficult to get affordable health care.
