A Guide to Long -Term Care Insurance

According to the Small Business Council of America (SBCA) buying a long-term care (LTC) insurance plan is probably one of the most important decisions in a person's life. In fact, based on American Society on Aging (ASA) estimates, LTC insurance should not be an option for aging boomers. It should be a requirement. According to ASA, people who are 65 and older have a 70% chance of needing long term care before they die. Dying is the inexpensive part. The average annual national cost for nursing home care is over $70,000. At $52,000 annually, home healthcare may be relatively cheaper but could still easily deplete financial resources. The costs are expected to increase threefold in the next 20 years based on a 5% rate of inflation in long-term care costs. Few will argue the value of LTC insurance plans for aging individuals.

Zach Johnson's stock worth millions

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- They sat down in a conference room and bought Zach Johnson for 500 bucks a share. A doctor, a lawyer, a banker, an engineer, a real estate broker, a few insurance guys and the owner of a janitorial business.

They drew up a contract, one that wasn't designed to make anyone rich. They already were rich enough, every one of these 12 investors who were friends and acquaintances of Johnson's father, Dave, and distinguished members of the Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Zach Johnson wasn't in the room. They cut a deal with the Drake University golfer, anyway, out of the goodness of their heartland hearts. Lon Feddersen, insurance man, went for four shares at two grand. The most ambitious investor purchased 10 shares at five grand.

Up front, everyone was told the agreement would die when Johnson made it to the PGA Tour.

Are you prepared for retirement?

Find out how much money you need to retire in comfort. And if you dont have it yet, find out how much you need to save every month to have it.

Retirement planning is a topic of much debate in the US, as the 77 million Americans born between 1946 and 1964, popularly known as Baby Boomers, slowly approach retirement. On the one hand, medical advances mean they will live longer than all previous generations most of them will spend upwards of 30 years in retirement. On the other, not many of them are financially prepared to put their feet up. A survey conducted by the Employee Benefit Research Institute of the US reported that just 25 per cent of workers are very confident about having adequate funds for a comfortable retirement.

A love story: Black Betsy and Shoeless Joe Jackson

It has been weeks since Betsy's last sip of fresh oxygen. She is kept behind a door, locked from the outside. She shares her space with a stack of reading material, but there is no light to make the words dance.

The whispers in her direction come infrequently. When they do, all anyone talks about is how old she looks, how heavy she is and how the blemishes on her 99-year-old complexion seem wider and deeper than black-and-white photographs indicate.

Betsy has had 55 years to adjust to being a widow. What she did best, of course, was support her man, Joe — and make him look good. But then Joe left her, in December 1951. Betsy was in his office, keeping quiet as always and leaning against the wall next to his desk, when Joe's heart gave out. He never said goodbye.

Unions seeking new types of workers

By JOHN SEEWER THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

TOLEDO, Ohio - Hoping to stop the erosion of organized labor, union leaders are looking beyond their core auto and steel industries and recruiting low-wage service workers and professionals worrying about losing their health care.

The new faces of unions are immigrants working at construction sites, hospital nurses, parking lot attendants, mechanics and casino dealers - all groups who are unlikely to lose their jobs to overseas workers.

Al Mixon, president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 507 in Cleveland, just finalized a contract with American Red Cross employees in northern Ohio.

"We're all forced to look into new areas," he said.

And this may be just the beginning of unions reshaping at a time when factory jobs are being sent overseas or lost to technological changes.

New York Times Investigates Denials of Long-Term Care Insurance Claims

The New York Times on Monday examined how, although tens of thousands of elderly U.S. residents have "received life-prolonging care as a result of their long-term care policies," thousands of policyholders "say they have received only excuses about why insurers will not pay." The Times reviewed more than 400 grievances and lawsuits filed against long-term care insurers and found "some long-term care insurers have developed procedures that make it difficult -- if not impossible -- for policyholders to get paid." According to the Times, the issue has not received much attention because long-term care insurers settle many lawsuits with the requirement that documents and depositions remain confidential. In addition, "few states have conducted meaningful investigation" into the issue, the Times reports.
