China and the Hedge Fund Dragon - Subprime Mortgage Market ...

This week we look at the possible latest entry into the hedge fund world, The People's Republic of China; review the cockroach principle of subprime mortgages; and investigate the possibility of whether we need more derivatives and not less than the $283 trillion or so we now have. It's a lot to cover, but it should all be interesting.

And speaking of China, we all read the stories about the rapid growth of the economy, the increasing percentage of the growth in demand for commodities and energy that comes because of that growth, the increased trade deficit with the US, and the rapid increase in foreign reserves.

Young motorists could find car insurance out of reach

Young drivers may find it difficult to get motor insurance companies to cover them if nothing is done to cut the number of people being killed or injured on the UK's roads, an insurer has warned.According to Co-operative Insurance (CIS), motorists aged under 25 are involved in 35 deaths and serious injuries every day.Because of the high figures, car insurance premiums may be affected, David Neave, CIS Director of General Insurance said."If this trend continues many young car owners will be unable to afford insurance and that will inevitably lead to a rise in the number of uninsured motorists on the roads and that would have major consequences for us all."Road safety charity Brake said that it would welcome the addition of road safety education to the national curriculum, which could potentially help young drivers keep their motor insurance premiums intact.Additionally, the charity called for the rapid introduction of Graduated Driver Licensing to spread the process of learning to drive over several stages, allowing young people to develop their skills over time.On February 20th, CIS and Brake launched an educational resource pack for the classroom entitled Too Young To Die with the aim of cutting road deaths and potentially helping youngsters learn how to avoid making a claim on their car insurance.Drivers could save up to £231.92 on their motor insurance with Kwik-Fit Insurance, according to research conducted last year.

Small Business Owners Turning to HRA Plans to Reduce Health ...

Small business owners are turning Health Reimbursement Arrangements (HRA) plans as a way to help their employees obtain affordable health insurance.

Fort Collins, CO (PRWEB) March 27, 2007 -- HSA for America, the nation's leading provider of Health Savings Accounts and HSA-qualified health insurance plans for individuals and families, reports record numbers of small employers signing up for Health Reimbursement Arrangements. Employers are using HRAs as a way to legitimately reimburse individual health insurance premiums to their employees, saving 50% over group rates.

HRAs are special employer-funded accounts set up to reimburse specific medical expenses directly to employees. They came into being when the IRS issued Notice 2002-45 and Revenue Ruling 2002-41.

RFID Reader Prevents Reagent Counterfeiting In Healthcare Industry

Cloning and counterfeiting pose perhaps the greatest threat in the healthcare industry where decreased reliability and performance of medical devices and medication affect diagnosis and treatment. The downstream effects are decreased patient safety, insurance cost efficiency, and provider reputations.

Iris Diagnostics, a division of Iris International (NASDAQ: IRIS), is tackling the cloning problem head-on by RFID-enabling their iQ200 Automated Urinalysis System. Utilizing chemical reagents to detect the presence of molecules in urine samples, the machine relies on reagents of the correct type, freshness, and authenticity in order to deliver the most accurate results. To prevent reagent counterfeiting, Iris Diagnostics is incorporating SkyeTeks RFID reader and ReaderWare Security technology into their product.

MMA Meddling Leaves 35 000 Without Health Insurance

Bureaucratic wrangling and obstruction by the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) and the Finance Ministry, both headed by Gasim Ibrahim, have left the governments army of nearly 35 000 civil servants without any health insurance. The International Medical Group (IMG), which signed an agreement with the government in June last year to provide its employees with health cover, ceased paying out on claims on Friday, after the MMA rejected its application for a general insurance licence. That leaves all Maldivian civil servants with no provision by their employer, the government, to help them in the event of health problems. They will have to fall back on the welfare system. Previously the government provided a stipend of Rf. 250 every three months as a health allowance. Many workers did not even realise this was a medical allowance, and almost none put the money aside in case of emergency.

Florida Health Insurance Quotes are easy to come by these days for anyone searching for health insurance on the World Wide Web. They also reported that "healthcare in the United States has an inflation rate of nearly 21% ", the highest inflation, with higher education coming in a close second. How can this issue be solved?

Florida health insurance is something that all of Florida residents and businesses would require at some point in time. One of the major concerns of Florida residents though is that the health insurance prices are constantly on the rise.

Bus tour promotes tax plan

AVON - He apologized for smelling like a hog farm and was called out as one of the only Republicans in the room, but Gregory Leigh was determined to make his point with Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

"The problem as we see it is our costs are going to go up by a significant amount when every supplier we have as a farmer would be in that category where they'll have significantly more taxes," said Leigh, who had maneuvered his way up to the governor in the crowded room of the rural farm house in Avon that Blagojevich visited Tuesday.

"There's no perfect solution here," Blagojevich responded. "If we had a perfect solution, we'd get rid of all of your taxes. That would be a given. We analyzed and looked at the fairest thing to do to provide health care and grow our economy and fund our schools."

Though Blagojevich has largely been selling his gross receipts tax plan to receptive audiences around the state as part of his four-day "Investing in Families" tour, the dialogue was indicative of the struggle the governor faces in peddling a program that will cost many businesses thousands more a year.

Senate committee cuts hurricane mitigation largess

TALLAHASSEE -- The Senate Banking & Finance Committee is proposing a leaner version of a hurricane mitigation bill than one already passed by the House of Representatives.

The committee unanimously passed a bill today that would limit matching grants to 25 percent of the cost of home safety improvements, not to exceed $2,500. Low-income Floridians could qualify for an outright grant of no more than $2,500.

"It's time for Floridians to take responsibility for protecting their homes," said the bill's principal sponsor, said the committee's chairman, Sen. Bill Posey, R-Rockledge.

The bill also eliminates new roofs or roof reinforcements from the improvements that may qualify for hurricane mitigation grants. The state will grant money for opening protections -- mainly various types of storm shutters -- exterior doors, and the bracing of gable ends.

Take brakes off car insurance savings

LIKE to save several hundred dollars this year? Here's a tip. Get online and start shopping around for car insurance.

Unlike house insurance, it's relatively straightforward to switch car insurance policies - and there's never been a better time as the competition hots up, particularly among those insurers selling online. But there are factors apart from price to consider. Here's what you need to know.

Discount Premiums

The good news is that car insurance premiums have fallen recently, thanks to a competitive market and factors such as a shift to cheaper, smaller cars.

Competition is particularly fierce in NSW, where IAG-owned NRMA has reduced its prices to recoup lost market share after controversy over its repair procedures.

Grahame McDonald, car insurance spokesman for NRMA, which boasts a market share of about 50 per cent in NSW, says NRMA's premiums have fallen by about 4 per cent in the past 12 months compared with an average fall across the industry of about 1.5 per cent.

Visually impaired athlete gets help from coach

IN March 2006, Willy Cahill, owner of Cahill's Judo Academy in San Bruno, invited Jordan Mouton, a 16-year-old severely visually impaired junior from Cypress Falls High School in Houston, Texas, to train at his facility. At age 8, Mouton was found to have rod/cone dystrophy, a name given to a wide range of eye conditions that will cause her to eventually be totally blind.

Cahill, a Black Belt Hall of Fame member and Judo Instructor of the Year 1975, who has served as coach to Stanford University, the U.S. team for the Pan-American Games, the World Championships and the Olympics, had met Mouton at a U.S. Association of Blind Athletes sports camp in Colorado Springs. He recognized her athletic ability and encouraged her to start judo in Houston.

Because of judo, Mouton also got into wrestling.

16-03-2007: AXA to enter S Korea RM32b auto insurance market

AXA, Europe's number two insurer, has secured a foothold in South Korea's US$9 billion (RM31.57 billion) auto insurance market by announcing a deal on March 16 to buy a top domestic online auto insurance unit for an undisclosed sum.

The acquisition of unlisted Kyobo Auto Insurance should provide a springboard for the French insurer to advance into other insurance segments in the world's eighth-largest insurance market, where an ageing population is likely to boost demand for long-term and health-related policies.

Continuing deregulation in the country's insurance sector is expected to broaden insurance companies' coverage, prompting AXA to return to Asia's third-largest economy six years after it withdrew in 2001.

Unlisted Kyobo Life Insurance, South Korea's number two life insurer, is selling its entire 74.7% stake in the online insurance unit to concentrate on life insurance business, it said in a statement.

Q and A With Mickey Ward

In the sport's glory days, it wasn't uncommon for top fighters such as Jack Dempsey to parlay their national popularity into film roles, and since that time several actors have laced up the gloves in boxing-related pictures. In recent years, critically acclaimed movies such as “Cinderella Man" and “Million Dollar Baby" proved that the sweet science still sparks interest on the big screen, even if the happenings of the sport are of little importance to today's average sports fan. The success of the underdog, such as the fictional Rocky Balboa and the real James J. Braddock, may be the most common theme in pugilistic flicks, and “Irish" Mickey Ward may be the next unlikely hero to hit the silver screen.Ward, a retired junior welterweight known for his devastating body punch and three action packed fights with Arturo Gatti, is the focus of “The Fighter," a biopic in the works by Paramount Pictures.
