The Question of Affordability
BOSTON, Mass. - April 04, 2007 - On the one year anniversary of an agreement that launched the state's universal health insurance law, there are marked differences about how to define a central element of the law: affordable coverage.
The definition is key because the requirement that individuals have health insurance only applies if affordable coverage is available.
The Connector Board began discussing "what is affordable" yesterday with two contrasting views, as WBUR's Martha Bebinger explains.

MARTHA BEBINGER: On the one hand, the board heard from MIT economics professor Jonathan Gruber who says lets define affordable as what people are already buying voluntarily. He says only seven percent of employees nationwide who are offered health insurance in the workplace turn it down.
Florida leads US in foreclosures
Foreclosures spiked in the state and around the region in February, according to a study released Monday that confirmed fears the housing boom's speculation and easy credit would lead to a hangover. In Florida, 19,144 homes entered foreclosure in February, the most of any state, said RealtyTrac of Irvine, Calif. .

Deal Would Cut Jobs
PHILADELPHIA -- The proposed merger of Pennsylvania's two largest insurance companies could result in about 1,000 lost jobs, mostly through attrition, a company executive said Monday.
Highmark CEO Dr. Kenneth Melani made the comments after a U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in Philadelphia on the planned merger of Independence Blue Cross and Highmark Inc., two nonprofit companies that are not traded publicly.

Editorial: Amendment Needed for Insured Drivers
State Rep. John Smithee, chairman of the House Insurance Committee, has stepped up with legislation to protect Texas motorists who file a legitimate claim under their auto policy against losses inflicted by uninsured motorists but face an insurer reluctant to pay. Smithee, R-Amarillo, isn't proposing any radical change in House Bill 2013. In fact, he's just trying to restore the law as it was practiced until late last year. Scheduled for a hearing today before Smithee's committee, the bill is necessary because of a Texas Supreme Court decision on Dec. 22. The Brainard decision, named after one of the plaintiffs, said insurers weren't obligated to pay an uninsured or underinsured motorist's claim until a court had ruled on who was liable and determined the damages. Also, the court said, the insurer was not obliged to pay the legal fees of a policyholder who had to sue to collect.
Organic Food Healthier
Researchers from the University of California-Davis found that organically grown kiwis had substantially higher amounts of vitamin c and other ingredients known polyphenols. Those help cut cholesterol and the risk of cancer. They also improve circulation. The researchers speculate that conventional pesticides could disrupt the development of the healthy ingredients in fruits. Organic fruits and vegetables should taste similar to the regular fruit or vegetable, but many times, organics taste better. A manager for Kroger Supermarket's organic fruits and vegetables section said that many of his repeat customers come from those who "accidentally" buy the organic variety -- and then find the taste is superior to the regular produce.
